This was my 1963 Johnson Seahorse 5.5 hp outboard. I bought this on E-bay and the day I got it the original owners wife sent me an e-mail telling me her husband had just died, she went on to tell me he had been a Vietnam Vet. and had been fighting cancer for 2 years, but he would always take this motor out every weekend to go fishing. I hadn't planned on keeping this motor but after her story I felt obliged to find it a good home after I tuned it up and replaced the impeller. As luck would have it i met a Vietnam Vet. at the dock where I go fishing, he was rowing his boat in right as I was launching. I knew he was a vet because of a sticker onhis boat, after talking to him he said he was looking for a motor and I told him about this one, I ended up selling it to him for what I paid for it plus the cost of the impeller. I still occasionally see him fishing where i go and he id still running this motor everytime and tells me how happy is to have it. I was just happy to find it a good home.

My project motor is finally complete (still have to change the tiller gears). This motor was a piece of scrap, lower unit was in pieces , powerhead seized, most plastic bits broken. Got the lowerunit from a gent in KC , it's a sail lower unit, extra long. The powerhead has been rerung, cleaned and all new gaskets installed, carb was cleaned and kitted. It is from an 88 SEL motor, starts first pull. Externals were painted OMC white, powerhead was painted OMC powerhead black. Initially it wouldn't start, I tested for spark. I had the wires crossed, switched them around started first pull. No water came from the tell tale. I removed the lower unit and extension, water pump housing was bad. I swapped it for another one and I started to get water spray. Should run great as my new kicker.
